Australian university numbers rise over the past year

After a couple of years of uncertainty, it seems that Australian universities are booming again after new figures showed a steady rise in the number of applicants over the past year.

In the last 12 months, the number of people starting university rose by 5.1% with students attending a huge variety in courses across the country.

One of the reasons for the increase has been down to changes in the student visa making Australia a much more appealing destination for international students to attend.

The new reforms have made the application methods for a student visa much simpler to complete and it has also increased the options for foreign graduates to work in the country once they completed their course.

With the reforms in place, it has meant the number of successful college applications from outside Australia had jumped by 27% in comparison to early 2012 with the number of places in English courses increasing by 12%.

It marks a change from previous years where the number of students taking courses had dropped slightly in both 2011 and 2010.

But the resurgence has been seen as a positive step from those in the Australian higher education system and reflects on the high standards shown by many of the country’s institutions. This is reflected on by Sue Blundell of English Australia who told The Australian that “this is the real start of the turnaround in higher education.”

With the rise in international students being such a major rise, it has helped international colleges specialising in English courses benefit considerably with many of their graduates moving on to fill places at universities.

Despite academic course numbers boosting in popularity, the number of places on vocational course have continued to drop for the third successive year.

This is mainly due to a lack of certified colleges and TAFE’s who have been unable to benefit immediately from the visa reforms and be suitably prepared to accommodate international students.

Nevertheless, the rise in student numbers can still be a cause for celebration and still place Australia as one of the top countries in the world for international students to study higher education courses.
