Social Media and my visa application… can this affect me?
We live in an age where digital media has greatly influenced the way we live and interact with people.
Social Media and my Visa application:
Social Media plays a great part of most people’s lives and has also become a tool for many organizations and companies to verify information.
Immigration is one of those organizations which use “open source” verification methods to check on certain information provided by visa applicants, employers, students etc as part of the visa process.
They may use it for a number of reasons such as visa applications and monitoring and even visa cancellation.
Yes! This means they can check on Facebook Status on a partner visa application to see if you are really in a de facto relationship!
Also, Skills Assessment bodies such as TRA, VETASSESS and Engineers Australia use this method to check on whether particular employers exist and what their contact details are.
So what can I do to make sure I am not affected?
So while it is fun to use social media to let your friends and family know what you are up to, it is very important, to use your social media wisely and pay attention to the content and information published.
It pays to make sure that if you are in the process of applying for a visa or are a temporary visa holder [457, student etc.] which may be subject to this kind of verification, that the information you provide to Immigration is not in conflict with what Immigration or the assessment bodies can find online or by making a phone call. In all cases, you should always be truthful and upfront about any information provided to the Australian Government.
The consequences of providing false or incorrect information to any of these bodies can have very negative consequences for the visa holder and visa applicant, such as cancellation or refusal of a visa. In some cases, it can also result in a ban from applying from 3 to 10 years.
