7 tips to increase your chances to get a job in hospitality

For many, working in the Hospitality industry could be one of the most likely industries to start with and get some money coming into your pocket. So, what things should we take into consideration when job hunting in the Hospitality industry?
You have managed to leave your previous location and arrive in Australia. Welcome! Your life is beginning all over again and during the first two months, you are likely to be in the ‘honeymoon’ stage – where you are finding everything new, interesting and exciting. You may also be overwhelmed with finding somewhere to live and all of your essential resources to become established, choosing a mobile phone plan, opening a bank account, applying for your TFN, etcetera can be very time consuming as there is so much information you need to take before moving forward. But STOP! First things first. Lets get ready for job hunting!!!
1- HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HOSPITALITY RESUME?
- Who are you marketing yourself to and what are they interested in? Spot your target audience, prepare yourself and set a plan. It’s not the same to apply for a cafe or a Mexican or a Brazilian restaurant. All of them are looking for different skills and that’s what you have to demonstrate in your CV.
- How long should a resume be? 1-2 pages. Only include concise, compact and important information.
- Do I need to change my resume every time? Make it specific to the field. Eg. informal & formal, professional & hospitality, plan correctly and you will need 1 version for each field
- What if I don’t have much experience? Use applicable experience or even personal experience; focus on what you’ve achieved
- How do I organise my resume’s information? Reverse chronological best. The last job should be at the top and it should describe what you did.
2- DO NOT FORGET THE BASIC HOSPITALITY REQUIREMENTS:
The RSA is the Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate. Having your RSA certificate is mandatory and permits you to work anywhere alcohol is served and sold. This includes bars, clubs, restaurants, licensed cafes, events and bottle shops. Where to get this certificate from: You can complete an online RSA course and get your valid RSA for QLD, NT, SA & WA by visiting www.hia.com.au. The approximate cost of the online course is $15. The average time to complete this course is 2 hours, however you can always pause it, save it and continue later. If you are planning to move to VIC or NSW, there are no RSA courses available, but face to face course or by correspondence.
More Hospitality courses may be available for you to expand your job opportunities such as Responsible Service of Gambling, barista, commercial cookery, hospitality and others. 3- WHAT IS THE AVERAGE PAY FOR HOSPITALITY JOBS IN AUSTRALIA?
Pay rates could vary depending on your role, company and type of contract you may have with your employer. This could vary from $21/hour to $52/hour depending if you are eligible for penalty rates. Penalties are times or days of the week when rate are higher, such as day of the week, public holiday, from 7pm to midnight or even overnight. You can visit www.fairwork.gov.au for more information.
4- TIPS YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN PREPARING YOURSELF FOR YOUR INTERVIEW:
- Research & learn about your potential employer: what do they do, where they are located, what’s their market and workplace culture.
- Prepare for interview questions: know what your key competencies/strengths are & how they relate to job, we all have weaknesses – how we manage them demonstrates strength.
- What Should I Wear? dress for workplace and job, if not sure, ask in advance.
- DON’T BE LATE – IT’S A DATE!!! Engage, make eye contact, actively listen, don’t waffle and remember the interviewer is a person too.
- What do employers look for? They definitely look for a can do the job attitude, good presentation, add value to the organisation, fit with the workplace culture and reliable.

6- TIPS WHEN HANDING OUT HOSPITALITY RESUMES:
- Make a list of hotels/restaurants

7- THINGS YOU WILL BE ASKED DURING YOUR HOSPITALITY INTERVIEW:
When working for big hospitality employers such as 4/5 star hotels, casinos or even when going for a simple trial at a restaurant, pub or bar, it is always important to be ready to cover their expectations, so then you will increase the chances of getting the job. What does it mean? It is very likely that you will be asked the following questions:
Do you know how to carry three plates?
Do you feel confident carrying a tray with beverages?
Do you know how to clear tables and plates?
