CAUTIONARY TALE ON CHOOSING COURSES

CAUTIONARY TALE ON CHOOSING COURSES

It is not unusual for the immigration department to update its internal assessment policies relating to the grant certain types of visas. These changes mean that similar cases applied at different points of time might result in different outcomes.
Lately, as migration agents, we have seen a shift in the way the immigration department assess the 485 visa applications (skilled graduate visa).

Not long ago, international students who had an Engineering degree back from home who also studied two-year courses such as project management or leadership and management at diploma level or higher were eligible for the graduated stream of the 485 visa.

Now, the immigration department is arguing these courses are not as closely related to the occupation as initially, they considered.

This change in point of view means that applicants have to fully demonstrate why project management is closely related to his/her occupation to be able to get the visa granted.

For example, Jorge*, who is an environmental engineer from Peru, studied Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Project Management in Brisbane in 2013, after completing at least 92 weeks of study, he was able to apply and get granted his 485 visa.

On the other hand, Robert*, who is also an environmental engineer from Poland, started the same courses one year later (2014).

At the moment to apply for his 485, immigration department questioned why and how project management is a closely related course to grant his 485 visa resulting in a refused application.
So with the examples of these cases, it is now more important than ever to make sure the course you choose is highly relevant to your nominated occupation.
